Story:  As with many spirituals, Wade in the Water contains several layers of meaning.  Ostensibly referencing the flight of the Jews from Egypt, many scholars have drawn parallels with the plight of American slaves in the 19th century, with some going so far as to claim that the text contains specific instructions for escaping the South – by “wading” in the water, one could hide one’s scent trail from pursuing dogs.  This new arrangement highlights the rhythmic elements of the tune while maintaining a foreboding tone.

Text:

Wade in the water.
Wade in the water, children.
Wade in the water.
God's gonna trouble the water.

Well who are these children all dressed in red?
God's gonna trouble the water.
Well they must be the children that Moses led.
God's gonna trouble the water.

Well who is that young girl dressed in white?
God's gonna trouble the water.
Well she must be the child of Israelites.
God's gonna trouble the water.

Well Jordan's water is chilly and cold.
God's gonna trouble the water.
It chills the body but not the soul.
God's gonna trouble the water.
